Scratchpay offers simple and affordable payment plans for unexpected veterinary bills that won't affect its users' credit score. I've been hired trough Toptal with the goal of having me redesign their website.

The Briefing

As Scratchpay grew, the need for a more professional look and feel for its image became more urgent. They already had some cool branding elements known to their users that could be taken advantage of, so the goal for this project was to identify and take the most out of them. The branding would become a solid base for the improvements to be done on the user experience and user interface of the website.

My Approach

I used proto-personas and user scenarios so I could have a better guess at who the users are, why and when they use scratchpay.com and even what their emotional state is when they do so. This helped me get a clearer idea of how to improve their experience with the product.

Fostering Emotions Through Illustrations

The first thing I noticed about this brand was the potential of the illustrations. I found it unusual in a time where it seems like digital and tech products can only use super polished and shiny flat illustrations. They even had a mascot - Scratch, the Dog! She was cute and witty but lacked purpose. Also, most illustrations looked cartoonish and outdated.

This is a tech company that provides a financial service related to pets - it can be funny and cute, not childish.

We worked with Blue Carrot to create new illustrations and different poses and expressions for the mascot that could be used alongside different areas of content. Her goal is to make you smile with her witty expressions, easing some of the tension of a scenario in which you may have a pet in need for veterinary care but no money to pay for it. She also hints at where you should look at or what you should do next.

It's funny and it's cute. It's also professional and trustworthy.

Together with the Scratchpay team, I got to assemble the new UI of the website, piece by piece, by mixing existing and newly created design elements and content. The new website looks professional while keeping its' original identity that was improved, not forgotten. This revamp allows Scratchpay to better position itself in the marketplace and reach more customers.
